CareER is the first joint higher education institutions student community for higher educated students and graduates with disabilities and special needs. Established in 2013 with three founders and a group of passionate higher educated graduates with disabilities, CareER aims to create a platform for students to help one another through alumni experience sharing and a charitable job-matching platform by our HR professional knowledge. It is the first platform for gathering a group of positive and energetic young talents with disabilities who would like to volunteer and change the way employer and society look at person with disability.
CareER’s on-going activities include empowerment workshops, students/alumni gatherings. Our organisation focuses on promoting the idea of boundless talent to fellow employers by cooperating with various multinational corporations. CareER is keeping in touch with over 400 employers and over 100 employers is now our long-term partners.
To support CareER’s service level, CareER is working closely with SEN officers in different higher education institutions to help distribute our events, jobs and workshop information. On the other hand, we work closely together with other NGOs that are serving different types of disabilities and SENs to seek help from their professional knowledge on different areas.
CareER has 9 members in the Executive Committee (“Exco”) in the terms of every 2 years. The maximum of terms are 5 terms in total 10 years. The chairperson maximum terms are 3 terms total 6 years. CareER has the pro bono audit support from KPMG and pro bono legal company secretary support from King & Wood Mallesons.
CareER Executive Committee started to have 4 functions from 2018, empowerment for CareER members with disabilities and SENs, employer engagement, finance and administration, Public relations. The Exco meeting are in quarterly basis. The agenda contains financial updates, daily updates and discussion items. CareER working closely with the below stakeholders:
- CareER Members and candidates with disabilities and SENs: Our members are encouraged to join student committee and to organize member event and volunteer in other programme. CareER operates based on the efforts from our members-a group of positive and energetic young talents with disabilities. Their experience can be shared through our platform and more public canknow CareER. Students’ and alumni union play an important role in spreading CareER’s values.
- Education institutions: CareER works closely with SEN Officers in different higher education institutions. Each year, CareER host info and game booths at different campuses during Diversity &Inclusive week and equal opportunity week to promote our work with institutions.
- NGOs: CareER promotes our event, workshops and programmes through our partnering NGOs. Each year, we invite NGO partners to host free booth at our career fairs with Community Business, Fair Opportunity Programme in Hotel ICON.
- Donors: CareER hosts each year a volunteer and donor thank you lunch / reception in early of the year to allow networking opportunities among our donors and volunteers. We have done it in Cafe 8 and iBakery in the past few years.
CareER make use of the resource from our corporate partner, university/NGO and the contribution from our professional coaching and counselling team. As mentioned, CareER is working as a bridge between members and employers. Before the interview, we will talk with members to understand their interest, and after which we will offer job skills training, some counselling coaching workshop for members’ career development. On the other hand, a visit will be arranged in the corporate to have a look at the office environment and culture, in the meanwhile some other hiring tips and experienced will be briefed to employers.
Apart from that, our events are usually held combining efforts from all kind of vendor and companies. We believe that it is a good way to spread CareER’s values and to build a better inclusive community.
CareER is the first student union, alumni union and a charitable job-matching platform for the higher educated students and graduates with disabilities and special needs in Hong Kong. We focus on people’s ability not their disabilities. This platform for talents has matched over 150 higher educated people with disabilities and SENs into more than 100 employers since CareER founded in 2014 as a charity.
Each year, we have created more than 70 job placements around half of the placements are long-term employment and another half are different internships for students and new disabled/SEN people. According to our 238 job placements, most of the placements are successful placements which only less than 10 placements are unsuccessful which did not work out within the probation period.
CareER’s uniqueness is that we are a students and alumni platform with strong peer support. Since 2016, we have invited students and graduates with disabilities and SENs to step up as CareER student committee to develop programmes and activities for our peers. This year, CareER has 14 student committees from different universities and different physical and mental conditions. CareER founded with HR expertise. We have a strong team with HR professionals to support corporates to develop their long-term disabilities inclusion strategies through workshops, lunch and learn, office accessibility assessment and work experience activities.
CareER staff is relatively young. We are working hard to build up our knowledge through coaching, internal mentoring, executive coaching and international exposures. We are lack of resources to engage with wide range of volunteers from the community. We could only focus on knowledgeable volunteers from professional coaches, counsellors and social work experts. It is because CareER does not have in house social workers, counsellors and our corporate trainers.
